In order to become an Apprentice, the candidate needs to get a job with an employer/sponsor that can register them as an Apprentice.

Need funding support along the way?
As an Apprentice, they get paid while training on the job (Earn while you Learn), when it is time to go to Trade School (normally at a College) 80%/90% of tuition is paid for by the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development (MLTSD).
Depending on the Skilled Trade, there may be bonuses, bursaries and loans available:
- Provincial money for Apprentices
- If a Red Seal Trade
- They may get bonuses for every year completed of the Apprenticeship and other bonuses
- When they become licensed as a Journeyperson after completing any Ontario Apprenticeship, they may receive a $2,000 completion bonus.
- Local bursaries
Not quite ready for an apprenticeship
If they are not ready for an Apprenticeship because they need to do some upgrading or want to explore Skilled Trades before committing to a Trade, we suggest exploring:

Pre-Apprenticeship Programs:

Local upgrading:
- Quill Learning Network - all of their services are free (contracted by the Province to deliver Employment Ontario services) and they administer some great programs.
- Adult Education, including Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) assessment
